The general configuration of a brush filter is a spherical cap on top of the filter particles and a tubular structure in the pores. If the filtration rate remains constant, the actual water flow rate in the pores will gradually increase with the continuous deposition of suspended particles
As a result, the deposited particles are subjected to the gradually increasing shear force of the water flow. When the shear force is of the same order of magnitude as the adhesion force, the particles may peel off and be trapped in the lower layer of the brush filter.
Another explanation for the exfoliation mechanism could be the avalanche effect of the deposited particles. Therefore, in filter media layers that reach saturation but exhibit a metastable configuration of deposited particles, adsorption and exfoliation can occur simultaneously
